A happy camper with his first fish of the day.
Ty and I were able to sneak out for a couple hours Sunday afternoon for a bit of ice fishing on a local lake. I had a new auger I needed to break in and we were out of fish from our last trip. The fish didn’t cooperate to well, but we had a blast with Ty even pulling a few through the ice without any help from me.

Check out Empire Canvas Works and their Boreal Shirt. It is becoming my most important piece of winter equipment.

Ice Fishing to start 2011
With Jake at the ATA show, I figured I better get out and make something happen for the first full weekend of 2011. We have an annual ice fishing trip we do this time every year with Back 40′s own Kevin Biermeier, my Dad, my Father-in-Law, and a couple of my Dad’s buddies.
We did really well despite the cold weather, with a full limit of panfish (to include some really big bluegills and crappies). We fish almost exclusively with spikes and waxies. Vexilars, under-water cameras, propane heaters and portable ice fishing shacks make a full day on the ice at even bone crunching temps enjoyable!
Here’s to a few upcoming fish fries! Can’t wait to get back out on the ice.

It is now the week before Thanksgiving and a good majority of bowhunters have probably hung up there gear for the year either because they filled their tag or they have had enough for the year. This can be a real tough time to hunt for several reasons across the midwest, your deer could be getting a lot of pressure from too much activity in the woods (ex. people cutting wood for the winter, firearms season or just people out enjoying the few last days before the snow flies ) regardless of what kind of pressure it really doesn’t matter to the whitetail any pressure is enough to drive them to hiding and to become nocturnal. As I sit and look at all of my bow hunting gear laid out on the floor for the upcoming season, I can’t help but laugh at all of the “stuff” us bow hunters need nowadays to hunt. It got me thinking a little bit about what products I could leave at home and still feel confident that I could have a good chance at harvesting game. There are a few things in my bag of tricks that most likely will just take up space in my Badlands pack all fall, only getting used once or twice with no measurable results.
