Since all the other guys on Back 40 have shot birds this spring, it is leaving me the odd man out! I’ve got a couple more tries yet, but of course when this time of year rolls around I start forgetting about turkeys real fast and see my thoughts on shooting things with my bow turn towards fish! Yes, bow fishing is extremely addictive and just so much damn fun. You get to combine so many things we live to do (hunt, fish, shoot bows, etc.) as well as the always present competition aspect of out shooting your buddies that a night out bowfishing is the best thing going this time of year.
This picture shows about 75 gallons of carp we shot on Friday night. An average night for sure, with about 60-65 fish total. Once June rolls around and brings warmer water temps, 150 fish night are not uncommon. Sorry for the pic, there is not many ways to make this many bloody, stinking fish look good for photos!
So, instead of shooting foam or targets this spring/summer, find a buddy with a bowfishing boat (or build one yourself) and get out there! Be warned, it might only take you one experience before you are sinking thousands of dollars and hundreds of ours of time into this sport! Right Kevin??????

A happy camper with his first fish of the day.
Ty and I were able to sneak out for a couple hours Sunday afternoon for a bit of ice fishing on a local lake. I had a new auger I needed to break in and we were out of fish from our last trip. The fish didn’t cooperate to well, but we had a blast with Ty even pulling a few through the ice without any help from me.

Check out Empire Canvas Works and their Boreal Shirt. It is becoming my most important piece of winter equipment.

Ice Fishing to start 2011
With Jake at the ATA show, I figured I better get out and make something happen for the first full weekend of 2011. We have an annual ice fishing trip we do this time every year with Back 40′s own Kevin Biermeier, my Dad, my Father-in-Law, and a couple of my Dad’s buddies.
We did really well despite the cold weather, with a full limit of panfish (to include some really big bluegills and crappies). We fish almost exclusively with spikes and waxies. Vexilars, under-water cameras, propane heaters and portable ice fishing shacks make a full day on the ice at even bone crunching temps enjoyable!
Here’s to a few upcoming fish fries! Can’t wait to get back out on the ice.

I’ve long been fascinated with the “fast and light” modus operandi of some of the units in the American military. The Navy Seals, Recon Marines, Green Berets, and especially the Army Rangers. My grandfather was a member of the Army Rangers during the Normandy invasion, and visiting the battlefields of the Normandy Coast only fueled the fire to learn as much as I could about these brave fighting men. In my studies, the one thing that pops out at you is the utter mobility of these units. Utilizing these tactics and light gear, I’ve applied some knowledge to the animals I hunt. Spring Scouting
By Chris Eberhart
Despite what it might look like outside momentarily winter is winding down and spring is right around the corner. That means it’s time to think about spring scouting. For anyone who is serious about regularly tagging mature bucks the few weeks between snow melt and green up are some of the most important “hunting” weeks in the entire hunting year. What you do now will set the stage for success this fall. Read the rest of this entry »
