Sept. 3rd found some of us at Back 40 heading west on I-94 with dreams of chasing some bucks in the Badlands. After the 10 hour drive from my house, and the 12-14 hour drive for my counterparts in Central WI, we were ready to get out of the trucks and do some hunting.
On opening day, hunting doesn’t actually begin until 12:00 pm, so we had time to get our gear sorted out and be out glassing soon after sun up. Jerod and I headed north as Kevin, Ryan and Matt, (AKA Anthrax) all headed south. We soon had deer in the glass, but nothing we pinned our hopes on. Read the rest of this entry »

Dead Down Wind
Five years ago while working at Cabelas in Rogers, MN, a new product caught my eye. Maybe it was the shiny orange bottle? Maybe it was the catchy logo? I’m not really sure what attracted me to it initially, but after reading the science behind and using Dead Down Wind Scent elimination products, I was hooked. Read the rest of this entry »

This is the first season that I have been using Cuddeback’s newest addition to it’s line of high quality trail cameras, the Capture IR. I put my first set of cameras out in the middle of May thinking that it would take me some time to get used to the camera and to work out any of the bugs. After the initial warm up period, I can honestly say that this is the easiest camera I have ever used. This is saying alot from a self diagnosed trail camera addict!

The plans were finalized for my first late season mule deer hunt in Idaho. My gear was ready, my shooting was spot on, and my body was in excellent shape. I had one slight problem though. While I had footwear to cover most conditions, footwear required for a 5 day mountain hunt in November I did not, and I only had a week to go!! Cheap boots would not do on this trip, and all my research was pointing towards a great boot company from Montana. Kenetrek boots were my choice, and what a great choice that was!

JEROD: “The legs feed the wolf”. That statement was getting repeated in my head over and over during the last stages of my most recent 50 mile triathlon in the wilds of northern Minnesota. Fatigue had consumed every cell in my body and I was running on pure grit and mental determination. When I finally crossed the finish line, I knew I was one step closer in my evolution towards becoming the complete sportsman.

I have been running my Cuddeback cameras hard now since May15th. This is the first year that I have used the IR’s and I have nothing but good things to say. The biggest surprise is the quality of pictures and the amount of battery life compared to other cameras I have used. Back 40 will be running a full gear review of the new Cuddeback IR cameras soon. Please stay tuned…

Hunting seasons are slowly approaching here in the western states. We will be headed to the desert next week to get my blind set up on the water hole that I plan on hunting. Antelope hunting is the best way to pass time while waiting for elk, which starts two weeks after that. Be sure to check out Hunters Journey Magazine. We have a free online seminar which spells out the strategies in which we will be using. If you haven’t already, you had better dust off those bows and get practicing. Hunting season will be here before you know it! Hunt hard and make it happen!
